Joins Real Madrid on two-year deal

Silva signed with Real Madrid on a two-year contract through June 2028, the club announced.

Analysis: Silva arrives from Manchester City as one of the most decorated midfielders of his generation, having spent nearly a decade at the Etihad where he made 460 appearances and won 19 titles including the Champions League, six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and five League Cups. The Portuguese international is renowned for his technical quality, exceptional final pass, dribbling ability and composure under pressure, and brings valuable set-piece expertise and leadership to the Real Madrid squad. His remarkable injury record adds another layer of reassurance, having suffered just eight muscular injuries over the past decade and missing only 11 club matches through muscular pain during that period. At 1.73 meters, Silva is expected to operate either in support of Jude Bellingham or on the right wing under coach Jose Mourinho's anticipated 4-2-3-1 system, with the central midfield positions likely reserved for Aurelien Tchouameni and Federico Valverde. The Lisbon-born midfielder came through the Benfica academy before loan and permanent moves to Monaco, where he won the Ligue 1 title in 2016-17, before establishing himself as a Manchester City legend. His arrival at the Bernabeu represents one of the most significant signings of the summer transfer window.

Brings experience to Portugal

Silva has been named in Portugal's World Cup squad and heads into the tournament with Manchester City behind him after announcing he will leave the club this summer when his contract expires.

Analysis: Silva made 38 Premier League appearances this season, contributing two goals and four assists across 2,887 minutes in what proved to be his farewell campaign at the Etihad, where he spent nine years winning 19 major trophies and making 451 appearances in one of the most decorated periods in the club's history. The midfielder brings a wealth of experience at the very highest level of the game and his ability to find pockets of space, create chances and contribute both defensively and offensively makes him one of the most complete midfielders in the tournament. Silva heads into what could be his final World Cup as one of the most respected and technically gifted players in the competition, and his performances could prove decisive in how far Portugal ultimately go.
